Coolant flush question.

So, a few months ago, I got a coolant flush. However, this happened recently:

Now, I’m no expert, but coolant is not made of poop. So.... what the fuck is this? Do I need to get it all cleaned out, rather than just flushed? Will I need a new radiator, hoses, and/or reservoir? The reservoir has some orange/brown stuff caked on the walls, so I’m guessing it came from there. It’s causing my coolant to boil after sitting for long, but it stays within a reasonable temperature while moving. I’ve already replaced this cap with another one, by the way. I’ll take a look at that one later and see if it has goop on it already or not.

Check the underside of your oil cap too, but looks like you may have a failing head gasket to me.

Uh oh, that’s no good! I’ll definitely have to check it out.

The stuff in the reservoir has been there for at least a year or so, though. So if that is the case, I’d assume it would have gotten significantly worse by now. But that’s still worth looking into.

On the plus side, with my new job starting next month, I’m going to do an EGT engine/manual transmission swap as soon as the first one of those two things goes bad. So even if there is something failing, that only means I’m that much closer to an upgrade. :D

That’s oil getting into your cooling system. Possible head gasket, engine oil cooler, or trans cooler. One of those coolers, if equipped, could be a part of the radiator.

Well shit. Better than the other way around, at least. I’ll have to take a look at that. Thanks!

I don’t have anything extra to add on the source of the gunk, but depending on how aggressive the flush was, it could have either stirred up some gunk at the bottom of your radiator or even pushed past a seal. This is for one of those machines they use at a shop...if you flushed it at home with a garden hose or the like then that’s unlikely.

It was done at the shop, so that’s definitely possible.

everyone seems to have mentioned all the possible causes. here’s my two cents:

Probably not Dex-cool mixed with green. Most shops have switched to yellow since it works in just about everything.

I’m leaning towards engine oil mixed with block scale. Failed trans coolers usually turn the coolant to tomato soup but doesn’t usually form sludge.

my educated guess is head gasket, especially when we consider it’s a 1.9L escort.
